SOUTH BEND – Two people were hospitalized Friday afternoon after a two-vehicle crash in front of the Goodwill Store on Ireland Road.

According to South Bend police, about 3:30 p.m. a blue Saturn Vue traveling east in the 1900 block of Ireland Road rear-ended a white Chevrolet Cavalier waiting to turn left. The Cavalier in turn rear-ended a third vehicle.

The drivers of the Vue and Cavalier both complained of general pain and were taken to the hospital, police said. The driver of the third vehicle was not injured.

Ireland was restricted to one lane both ways for about 45 minutes while emergency crews cleared the scene.

They were probably dodging the massive potholes!!! I live around the corner from here, and I busted two of my hubcaps on the stretch of road. (In my new car.) And no....I do not drive crazy! I don't understand why they're working on other parts of Ireland, but have yet to fill in these potholes.

They closed the road helping victims of an accident. Big Deal!! Take another route! They probably had to close the road because of all the drivers who either pay no attention and put the emergency worker's lives at stake while driving past or to discourage people driving by and craning their necks to see what happened. Even if you are detoured, you are having a better day than those that suffered in the accident - be grateful you weren't in the victims shoes. How shallow can you be????

I am glad that all the crews were there during my roll-over accident not far from there. I am very blessed to have walked away with only a small bruise on my hand and am very thankful that the crews were there in case the driver and I wouldn't have been okay. I am afraid to see what will happen after the budget cuts.

I appreciate what the emergency responders do, but I do think that that they could do things more efficiently. Why do they need to block the entire road? Also since when has being an emergency responder gone from helping people to being political. Thanks to SBFD for what you do, but could do without the sarcasm. I drove past at the beginning of the wreck and everyone was out walking around, as far as I could tell there was little risk of death.

The reason so many departments respond, is that each department, due to the tightening budget, has to fight for relevance and essentially funding dollars. They figure if they respond to everything, they will be the department everyone remembers when its time for funding. Look at how many city workers have found a new resurgence for completing tasks they have not been doing for years. Its called fear of losing your job.

I hope frustrated driver never gets in a serious accident. I was in a serious multi-car accident and not enough help was available. Always better to error on the side of caution if possible. With lives and disability at stake time is critical. THANK YOU to all emergency responders that work so hard to save lives!

Man, I think the city owes you a huge apology. Maybe they should cut you a check for having to be inconvenienced by someone else's bad day. Sorry man, but I can't agree with anything you have said. Would you rather have too many people there trying to get you out and work on you or not enough and risk death? Maybe you should actually do a ride along with each Dept and see what we really have to go through on these calls. Maybe then you'd understand why we do what we do.

This accident showed the major over response of the South Bend emergency crews. They had a good 4 fire trucks, the search and rescue SUV, 3 ambulances, and 5 police. When I drove past just after the accident they had block one lane each way. When I was coming east back past they had the entire east bound lane closed and were routing people in the west bound lane through a turn lane. This is just getting ridicules that any time anything happens everyone under the sun has to respond to it.

A center turn lane is desperately needed along that stretch of road. Oh yeah, and it needs to be paved, too.

Nobody pays attention to what is going on along this stretch, not surprising there was another accident.
