Employees say Scott Brass locked its doors

Employees of Scott Brass, Inc. in Mishawaka were notified by the company that significant layoffs or even a plant closure may become necessary in the near future. (WSBT photo)

MISHAWAKA — Some local workers are off the job, but it may not be permanent. Employees say Scott Brass in Mishawaka locked the doors Friday.

The company employs 78 people at the Mishawaka plant. As WSBT reported Thursday, the company said it's having trouble getting the money it needs from the bank.

One worker says he was told the company made the decision after an emergency meeting Friday afternoon.

A company spokeswoman would not confirm any information, but another worker told us the company is concerned it won't be able to meet future payroll.

Workers were told they can collect current paychecks Wednesday.

The company also operates plants in New Carlisle and Rhode Island. They have either scaled back or suspended operations.

another union plant closing! Look at the Big 3, problems because of Unions. Unions keep America uncompetitive and reward those who are lazy.

my union for a local warehouse is married to the company, vice versa, the union rewards people who call off work and violate company rules with better jobs or shifts than the people who have less seniority, and no i am not talking about months or days i am talking about years of service to an employer. i am grateful to be working and have some stability right now but the union use to mean something in the 1940's but now it is a game of who is bowing down to corporate executives with low morals!

I love today's under 30 crowd. Your attitudes about hard work are all the same. Instead of working hard you lie and cheat to get ahead. They used to say "Don't trust anyone over thirty", but the saying amongst people like me who have had more than their share of misfortune hiring people with your work ethic the new saying is "Don't trust anyone under 30"

T.Paine & wow, good points. Unions are necessary evils. Humans fall far below their potentials, it's me, myself and mine and screw eveyone else- workers, bosses and rich capitalists, same attitude. What's surprising to me is that we haven't blown ourselves to hell yet with H-bombs, given the reality of human nature. Is there any hope? Maybe the wild-eyed radicals and socialists have a point. Make everyone equal economically and regulate every facet of life. Sure would be a dull old world.

NO Unions help people. They prevent employers from firing good hard working individuals without just cause like all the non-union employers do. People that complain about unions are probably employers posing as joe blow with a scare tactic horror story in an attempt to decieve others.

Why on earth you need a union to help you keep a job you don't want or like is beyond my comprehension!!!

When our union was decertified, the boss began promoting only people he personally liked. Of course, those people would claim that they were promoted based on "merit". People are people. If you're a human being, even the best will slip and be biased. We have to keep each other honest. Look at human history. Bosses are not renown for honesty and fair play. It's just not in the character of those who fall into those lines of work. Laws had to be passed to keep them from working us 100 hrs/week!

If I work union, it helps keep all the non-union wages competitive. If not, employers could not keep skilled tradesmen. So as you see, probably you come from a closed shop union, such as steel workers, UAW, etc. Unions are NOT all the same. They are only as strong as their leadership. So if you don't think the Union is doing anything for you, get off your butt and see what you can do for the Union and your employer! If they are not making money, they can't pay you! KEEP THAT IN MIND!

Dear mislead, I am member of Local 1029 Millwrights. In closed shop unions, such as factory workers,I tend to agree somewhat, where leadership is weak. As for Unions as a whole, especially trade unions, your job is not protected, you work by merit and merit only! You can be laid off and replaced the very same day. As in any other situation, you are responsible for your own destiny. The union keeps you safe, establishes a good working wage, benefits and raises. CONTINUED.....

Let's get some facts straight here. The WARN act was created for situations like this, but there has to be at least 100 employees. http://www.doleta.gov/programs/factsht/warn.htm Companies that treat employees fairly don't need Unions, those that don't do. Read history books and see why unions were first created. Working conditions were terrible. Many union workers make a higher wage than non-union workers. Better pensions also. There's nothing wrong with high paying American jobs, is there?

You know who needs unions? Losers who work for losers. If they are a union shop they are represented by losers! Unions had their place once, but no more. Do an honest day's work for an honest man and the rest will take care of itself. I have seen too many instances where better people with far better attitudes get passed over because union rules they have to be offered by seniority. I believe in merit. I believe in integrity, my boss believes in me! Unions? I don't need no stinking unions!

They have been trying for weeks to get funding. They had numerous emergency meetings on Friday and this was a last resort...They were trying to get funds for payroll and for inventory. Banks are leary to lend money they are unsure can be repaid. Wachovia got bailed out but is still unwilling to lend to SB. They did everything they could, believe me, they did not want to close these 3 plants. It had absolutely nothing to do with unions. The office employees are not unionized and they are out too.

I wasn't touting a Union I was only making a point that there was probably addtional protection for the employees because of a binding contract. Personally the sad state of the US auto industry can directly be connected to the contracts negotiated in the late 70's to the mid 80's they made promises that are almost impossible to keeep. Yes the car makers made the promises but the unions literally held them hostage. The same thing is to blame for the Michigan economy.

Unions are what destroyed the manufacturing industry in this country. Give me a break. I worked with one guy who told me his full time job was just to make sure one - to two bolts were securely tightened on the automobiles. this was for International Harvester in the 70's and he was paid over $20/hour. go figure.! No wonder the companies head overseas. I'm all for a fair wage for fair work but that and union fees are ridiculous.

25 years ago I trod the halls of the Scot Brass bldg. Then it was known as the Dodge Mfg. Speed Reducer plant. Greedy stockholders and upper management along with the the devious Reagan Admin.(which permitted all manner of pro-business, anti-union activity) allowed this prosperous home-town business to be merged and taken over, by hostility. A lot of insiders became rich in this deal and the business was busted up and ruined. One profiteer died after the deal. Cosmic Justice reality check?
