SOUTH BEND -- Hundreds of walkers came out Saturday morning to help raise funds and awareness for breast cancer at the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event.

Family and friends came to support their loved ones affected by the disease.

The Psalm 23 Hair Salon closed Saturday morning to walk for their client Celesta Turner. Veronica Wheeler says her group raised $1,900 before she even knew Turner was a survivor.

"When I heard Celesta was a survivor yesterday it just melted my heart," Wheeler said.

Turner said she come to the event to be inspired. "It makes a big difference — it helps you strive and to want to go on and want to do good."

Some survivors, like Lyn Murphy of Mishawaka, said they came to inspire people who were recently diagnosed or who are still fighting the disease.

"I am a breast cancer survivor and I saw what it meant to me at the very beginning of my battle to see the survivors, and so I come out every year so people who are newly diagnosed can understand they can beat this," she explained.

Saturday's 5k walk was organized by the American Cancer Society. Organizers say they are hoping to raise around $150,000.

MICHELLE: my comments are intended to open eyes, that is all. we are all slowly having the wool pulled over our eyes while the labotomy is being performed. I don't keep a secret of who I am, just read my blogs, put them together, and you will know. I am a person who has dealt with breast cancer. Do not judge everyone as though they have no clue as to what is happening in this skruwd up world. I find joy, humor, disgust, hate, freedom, liberty, justice and injustice in every story I read.

Why they dont write their names on this comment line? Are they afraid to tell who they are? Confusion, wow, this and that. It semms there is no name line. God gave us names to use and they should be using them. The girls who have breast cancer should be aware of the dangers of not touching their breast very often. They are the life line to live or not to live. My daughter Candy was detected with breast cancer. She is not old yet, however she got one and were caught on time. Please, girsl check..

I was there and really was nice to see girls showing the support. This is the right place and time to give the support. Thank you for all your hard work.

I really hope that all the girls who made a scene at NWMS with Pink Hair showed their support here today. This is how they should have done it. I am anxious to find out if they walked.
