Free or reduced lunch in Elkhart schools

ELKHART — High unemployment in Elkhart County is causing more students to apply for free or reduced breakfast and lunch. More parents in the Elkhart school system are relying on the program so their children won't go hungry.

Betty Flowers' mom and dad are currently out of work. The third grader at Woodlawn Elementary is on the free lunch program and she likes it.

"It has your fruits. It has my favorite milk and that's strawberry," Betty said. "I like my lunch because it’s the best."

This year, compared to last, the Elkhart school system has had 1,500 more students sign up for a free or reduced lunch with more than twice that number signed up for breakfast.

Pam Fletcher of District Food Services said, "It's because of the economy and parents being laid off, or losing their positions. We are hearing from parents that they are having trouble making ends meet, so I think that's why we're getting more and more parents coming in."

Cindy Hackman, the lunch supervisor, says she hears almost every day from students about their financial struggles at home.

"They'll tell me their parents have lost their jobs, they're losing their homes and they have to move in with Grandma," she said. "Some of them have even told me that they're moving into hotel rooms because they don't have a place to go."

The school system says the government funded program provides some students with their only balanced meals of the day.

Wa-Nee school system is experiencing the same situation. They have seen a jump of over 40 percent in the number of students going with free or reduced meals. They say those numbers keep going up.

I am a single mom working two jobs to make ends meet and instead of paying $8.00 a week its $2.00 a week. That really helps. How dare you say some of the comments on here. I hope some of you have to rely on people's good graces because maybe one day it would be me helping you and if you acted that way. I wouldn't help you.

To those of you expressing such judgmental remarks. Before you start tearing people down, instead of building up. I never thought I'd be a single mother, in a position where I have to support 3 children on my own. But I do & work full time to provide for them. I've had to rely on this program (with no other financial assistance) the past 2 years, since my divorce. I don't smoke or drink. So please remember there are good parents who are blessed to have this program.

To 8:39 and 8:14-- Come on, these are hungry kids. Yes, some parents make the wrong choices, but the majority need it. Feeding our children should be a high priority in our country.

WHO CARES WHAT THEIR PARENTS DO? THESE ARE YOUNG CHILDREN WHO NEED FOOD AND NOURISHMENT. I HOPE YOU NEVER HAVE TO WALK ONE DAY IN A STARVING AND UNDER-DRESSED CHILD'S SHOES BECAUSE YOU WOULD IRRITATE ME WITH ALL OF YOUR "I DESERVE" WHINING! THESE ARE INNOCENT CHILDREN. BOTTOM LINE INNOCENT HUMAN BEINGS AND YOU THINK THEY SHOULD BE PUNISHED BECAUSE THEIR PARENTS CHOSE TO MAKE POOR DECISIONS. Again children are our future--You may want to listen to Whitney Houston's "Greatest Love"

I really don't care what worthless parents do! I actually purchased full price lunch for a student for a few days because she was going hungry while waiting. I am a teacher and I make ok money for the months I work. I chose to buy this child lunch because it isn't her fault. I don't care what the circumstances are---the children aren't guilty. That child had no choice. She was a little girl with no money and considering she was under 9 she obviously couldn't find a job. You judge...cont.

I bet the kids still have their cell phones.

I'll bet half or more of those kids who get free lunches have parents who... somehow, someway, find a way to afford cigarettes and booze.

Where else are children gona eat a balanced meal? At home the fridge is empty and the bread counter has nothing and no milk for breakfast and no eggs or bacon. Children are growing everyday and need lots of nutrients for their brain to work and learn more things at school. But kids worry and sometimes cry. They ask... whay are my parents going through this? Why are we moving to a motel? Our house was so nice and large rooms and now we are living like rabbits many people in one small room. Why???
