GRANGER &mdash: Developers in Granger say despite the tough economy they are showing signs of growth. Toscana Park and Heritage Square say business is good and getting better.

Jerry Macri says even though many of his stores are empty, tenants will be moving in soon.

"Some of those units that look vacant are sold and as a matter of fact some of them are working on opening up soon," said Macri.

Macri says by the end of the month he's hoping to have every unit sold or rented except three and he's even looking to expand.

"What I need is expansion. That's my problem right now and I feel it's a good problem."

If the economy is affecting Macri in any way, he says it's been the challenge to get more lending.

"A lot of banks have slowed down lending and mine is the reverse. I need more lending because I have tenants that want to come out here."

Elizabeth Larocco is one of Macri's tenants. Her baby boutique "Hugs From Heaven" opens in November. Larocco says despite the economy she is moving forward with her plans.

"I did get a little nervous with the economy taking a little crash, but we want to be that bright spot in everyone's downtime."

Heritage Square also says more development is on the way. Friday it announced a Mike's Car Wash and Old National Bank will be opening this spring. It also says 2 new restaurants will open during the fourth quarter — Molly Brannigans Irish Pub and Soho Japanese Bistro.

Intersting to watch this debate. As a local resident, I simply admire that there even IS a debate. Congratulations to he who initiated it. Criticism is nothing more than proof of efforts applied, and a compliment in disguise. Enjoyed the newscast. Best Wishes with the future construction. Bryan

There is so much negativity out here. I suggest you start looking for beauty in this community, the way Mr. Macri does, or all you will ever see is ugliness. Are YOU claiming to know personally how all the businesses at Toscana Park are doing? Makes me wonder who you are. I happen to know Mr. Macri very well and while you claim 50% of TP is vacant, 23 stores have commitments. Out of the 5 remaining, 3 have interested parties. Stay tuned for the announcements in the coming weeks.

NO, and hostility is not necessary either. The economy IS tough, no doubt. But I applaud those who refuse to cave, and thus open the door to resolution and new avenues. If growing is detrimental, it is only to the developer. Either way, our community sees opportunities for growth...otherwise we simply 'Give Up'. If there is something to add, let it be solution. Negativity is abundant (and cheap). Solutions require more effort. Let's invest in a lawn maintenance contract. See? Heh Heh

Hey 2:32. I am not faulting Jerry Macri for failed business, but he aught to speak the truth. He dosen't need to expand when everyone is LEAVING! Hello! When did I say he should tear it down? He should just tell the truth! I am sorry, were you putting words in my mouth! Do you know personally how all of the businesses are doing? Toscana Park has been 1/2 empty with weeds growing all over for a while!

Wo can profess to know whether the venture was "Wise" or not, other than by opinion? What IS discernable, is that the concept has resulted in an impressive display for the community, and warrants support and appreciation on those grounds alone. Combine that with the fact that it exists almost solely off of start-up endeavors, and there is much to be said in the way of contribution. Judgments seem to impede Gratitude, and thus contentment, with this addition to the community. Sad, really.

Truth - How is it that you are so well informed of the comings and goings in the establishment, and continue to criticize. Find something to do. Confusion - Oh nevermind, Clarity in a haze is not even an option is it? Maybe you are both right, they should just tear it soen to give you a new view from the front of your box flap. Push ON, Progress Promoter. The economy needs you.

Though I do not claim to be an authority on such matters....I DO know that I certainly prefer efforts directed at bettering our community, than those applied toward criticizing it! If truly Beauty in the eye of the beholder, is in not those who see nothing but problems who are themself the issue? I applaud the man with the ambition, and extend my sincerest appreciations to he and his family. Don't they live here too? Your work is exemplary and my family supports your efforts....Gratefully!

Toscana Park is nothing if not a reflection of a commitment to the local community and an example of not only VISION, but a concerted attempt to walk in Faith of certain change. A brief interview on Mr. Macri helped me understand his intention to promote his local community on a Grand Scale and to assist potential entreprenuers in a time when few others would. It's continuing growth testifies to his positive energy and enthusiasm. Who can but admire the decision to Stay the Course Selected?

I predict, within 10 years, it will look like Eastgate shopping center in Niles.

Just to let ya know....there is definitely a lot more at Heritage Square and Toscana Park than Martin's...a lot of the stores are unique and have loyal customers. Just because there aren't a lot of chain restaurants there doesn't mean the place is going to go down the dumps. If you build it, they will come.

SO this really is Granger! For some reason I was thinking South Bend and Mishawaka were looking at this land to annex. I guess Granger is pretty much where ever you can find overpriced stuff. What I cannot understand is that Granger, wide spread as it is is NOT a money capital. SOME of the wealthiest families in the county live there, shop there and support overpriced businesses but most of the residents, in the REAL Granger are intelligent folks who will not be taken advantage of. I know a few!

1:23 PM Anonymous, please don't associate Mishawaka with Granger. Us Cavemen are already annoyed by the "elite Grangerettes".

Macri is an idiot. Lets review this in three years and see if it is still all full. Have you seen some of the stores there? Besides Martin's there really isnt anything. I have been some of the stores, I was the only customer each time. It one thing to lease the place for a year, but I just dont see them staying very long.

John T; can you please share with me the business that are no longer there by the Super Target besides the delicious restaurant Le Petit? Thank you.

I think Toscana Park has been a great asset to the Granger/Mishawaka Community. People will continue to want to eat out and shop whether the economy is in a rough spot or not. Toscana Park does a fabulous job and has so much to offer. I welcome the expansion.

There is also a 100 room Hilton hotel going in at Heritage Square... the thing is there are a lot of wealthy people that still have jobs up in Granger and Mishawaka, even South Bend. Not EVERYONE is in a tough spot right now...Just because the economy is bad doesn't mean everyone is.

The economy is in bad shape but not as bad as people think. People who know how to use a credit card and pay it off very quickly still have money. People who don't rely on one income and have 5 kids still have money. People who work in stable environments still have money. My family for one have not change anything we normally do. We don't make a lot of money but we spend and save wisely. Maybe these others will learn from this.

Sombody is full of hot air. All I got to say is good luck. How many have already left from the area? The super Target lot has lost ateast 6 businesses and more to come.
