SOUTH BEND - An Ivy Tech student told police he was robbed Tuesday night, forced at gunpoint to withdraw money from his bank account.

According to police reports, the 18-year-old Granger man was on his way home from class about 8 p.m. when an unknown man opened the passenger door and jumped into the car.

The victim told police he wasn’t familiar with the city and didn’t know where the man entered his car, but he thought he was at a stoplight on Sample Street.

The intruder displayed a handgun and demanded the man’s wallet. After spotting an ATM card, he told the man to go to a nearby bank and to withdraw money from an ATM machine.

The victim said he was forced to drive to a second bank and also withdraw money.

The intruder then left the car and climbed into a dark four-door vehicle that had been following his car. The vehicle then left the area.

The Granger man told police he then attempted to call 911, but the battery on his cell phone was dead. He said he didn’t go to the police station because he didn’t know where it was.

The man returned to his home in Granger before going to the South Bend police station and reporting the crime about 10 p.m.
