Local worker watches final debate closely

NAPPANEE — Elkhart County's RV industry has seen its share of problems. With high unemployment, voters were watching the final presidential debate closely.

Regina Yoder is a single mother of two who works for RV maker Newmar Corporation. She's seen about half the co-workers in her department get laid off over the past few months.

With two young kids to feed, the last thing she needs is an uncertain economy. She's worried she might lose her job.

Undecided before the three debates, Regina is now firmly behind John McCain.

"Small businesses. The company I work for is a small business. And he's concerned not only for big corporations but for smaller ones, too. And that would mean us," Yoder said.

Even though he's not old enough to vote yet, Regina's 14-year-old nephew, Jeffrey, counts himself as a Barack Obama supporter.

"McCain's making too much jokes," said Jeffrey Sandoval. "Barack is more serious and Barack is more for family. And McCain seems like he's more for the money, stuff like that. That's why I wish I could vote for Obama. If I were old enough, I'd vote for Obama."

Regardless of who wins the election, Yoder remains hopeful for the future.

"I'm hoping that once the election is over, things will start rolling around again and we'll see a better economy," she said.

Yoder said she did not hear enough about the immigration issue in Wednesday's final debate. The Honduras native hopes whoever is elected will come up with a fair policy to deal with illegal immigrants already living in this country without tearing families apart.
