ELKHART — An explosion and fire at a suspected meth lab in downtown Elkhart sent two people to the hospital with serious burns.

It happened just before 5 a.m. at 130 N. 2nd Street, according to the Elkhart Police Department.

Police and firefighters were initially called there following reports of a loud explosion. Once there, emergency crews evacuated the building.

Police then got a warrant and searched the apartment where the explosion took place. They found evidence of a meth lab, and called in a team from the Indiana State Police to take down the lab.

The explosion shattered and shook windows at a number of nearby homes, including the one Morel Yonkers lives in.

"My wife looked out the window and said, 'I can see flames and smoke,'" Yonkers explained. "At that time I was already on the phone with 911 [and] the dispatcher asked me how big of an apartment [or] house, what I heard, and I told her there was flames and smoke in the building."

The apartment's occupants — a man and a woman — were taken to the Fort Wayne burn center.
