After months of rising unemployment, jobless claims dropped for the month of September in Indiana, Michigan, Ohio and Illinois according to U.S. Bureau of Labor statistics.

Indiana reported a September unemployment rate of 6.2 percent and Michigan reported a rate of 8.7 percent — both down 0.2 percent from August.

"In September, Indiana enjoyed gains in the health care and construction sectors," said Teresa Voors, Indiana Department of Workforce Development commissioner. "There also was a strong showing in the leisure and hospitality industries."

County numbers will be released on Tuesday.

Ohio reported a September unemployment rate of 7.2 percent, also a drop of 0.2 percent from August.

llinois' unemployment rate dropped to 6.9 percent in September, while the state posted its fourth consecutive month of job loss for the first time in more than five years.

Illinois' unemployment rate was down from 7.3 percent in August, but it was far above the 5.2 percent the state reported in September 2007.

The U.S. unemployment rate remained at its five-year high of 6.1 percent last month.
