ELKHART — As the volatile stock market impacts the savings of millions of Americans, some local high school students are learning a unique lesson as well.

In an Elkhart Memorial High School economic class, students are playing a game of money — the "Stock Market Game."

There are two teams. Each team begins with $100,000 of fake money to invest in real stock market companies.

“So far it's been really hard to invest everything, but we're trying,” said senior Lauren Rumfelt. “So far we're losing on everything."

Holly Pawlak’s team is experiencing similar results. “In the Stock Market Game, we ended up investing almost $80,000 and already we've lost $13,000 in six days."

"Well, the goal of the Stock Market Game is to help increase students' financial literacy, to help them understand how the financial markets work," explained classroom teacher Erin Hartman.

Students taking the class say it is a great introduction to the real world of investing and add they are learning a lot about the state of the current economy.

They're learning real lessons about what their parents and grandparents are going through with investments.

"I see it as a huge eye-opener because the stock market is doing terrible,” said senior Tyler Wilson. “Mortgages are going up."

'It's kind of the perfect time to take this class because, right now, the Dow is going down and everything is just kind of going crazy and it helps us understand what's going on," added Corey Atwell, a senior.

Hartman says the game gives the students a big jump in understanding how the stock market works. She says it's an important tool when they go into the working world and are thinking about making investments.
