From Valparaiso to the Ohio state line, car-deer accidents occurred one after another from Saturday evening into Sunday morning along the Indiana Toll Road, according to Indiana State Police dispatchers.

Most of the accidents, which occurred between 8 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. Sunday, caused enough damage to vehicles to keep the state police and towing companies busy.

One of the most severe accidents happened at 7:40 a.m. Sunday near the South Bend-Notre Dame exit 77, dispatchers said, when a vehicle that struck a deer rolled over and sustained major front end damages.

"Slow down," is the advice dispatchers offer to motorists now that deer migrating and mating season is here. Using high beams when other vehicles are not around also helps light the sides of the roadway and may deter or frighten deer.

Indiana ranked 8th in a list of states that report the most deer hits per year, according to State Farm Insurance studies conducted in 2004 and 2005.

Michigan ranked 2nd in the State Farm studies.
