SOUTH BEND — South Bend Fire officials are looking into a string of vacant house fires and arsons. They say they've had 60 fires in South Bend since August, many in vacant homes.

At least a third of the fires were arsons; the others were accidents.

Investigators are trying to find out if one person or several people are responsible for some of the fires, and they don't have any leads.

“We are investigating to see if there is a connection with all these different fires and so far we haven't been able to connect the dots to it so, no, at this moment I'd say we have no verification that there is an arsonist out there," said South Bend Asst. Fire Chief Federico Rodriguez.

Fire officials say the number of fires is unusually high.

The fire department is asking the public to report any suspicious activity near or in vacant homes.
