SOUTH BEND – In response to a Tribune article, police now say that Sunday’s shooting death does not appear to be a random act.

Tim Corbett, commander of the St. Joseph County Metro Homicide Unit, said police suspect that the death of 22-year-old James Martin at a home in the 100 block of East Woodside Street appears to be more than a random, violent home invasion.

In a press release Monday, the shooting death was described as happening during an "attempted home invasion."

On Thursday, Corbett said he didn’t want to jeopardize the homicide investigation, but that people living nearby don’t need to be particularly concerned.

"We fell relatively comfortable saying this was not a random act, and I feel secure with saying that it was done by people that were familiar with the home," Corbett said.

"But I’d add that anybody anywhere needs to be diligent of their surroundings and to think about how to be safe and secure."

Corbett said he couldn’t speculate on a motive for the homicide. He said police are continuing to investigate all possible leads. So far, there have been no arrests in the case.
