SOUTH BEND — One person is dead after a shooting in the River Park area Tuesday night. It marks the seventh shooting in South Bend in four days and the second person to die from the gunfire.

Police have identified the victim as Justin Bird of South Bend.

His girlfriend called police after he was shot in the chest inside an apartment in the 3600 block of East Mishawaka Avenue near Logan Street. He died at the scene.

Police say a group of people were invited to the apartment Tuesday night. But what started out as a peaceful gathering quickly turned violent. Police say one of those invited guests is responsible for shooting Bird.

"And that invited guest got into some sort of confrontation with our victim and that's when the shooting occurred,” explained South Bend Capt. Phil Trent. “So this was not an outdoor random act."

Police say the shooter left the scene before officers arrived. They did not say if the shooter has been arrested.

It marks the seventh time in just four days that someone had been killed or wounded by gunfire in South Bend, including two previous victims along Mishawaka Avenue early Sunday.

In all, five people were shot across South Bend over the weekend, including 21-year-old Bradley Walls, who died after being shot in the head as he drove along Main Street in downtown.

Police said Tuesday they had arrested three people in connection with a shooting Monday in Pulaski Park, on South Bend's west side. A 17-year-old boy was critically injured in that shooting.

Police say the River Park shooting was not connected to the others; it was an isolated incident. The mayor, the prosecutor, and the chief of police will be holding a news conference Wednesday afternoon to address the recent violence.
