SOUTH BEND — Car break-ins are a big concern for police this weekend as Notre Dame football returns home to South Bend.

Police say thieves are looking for opportunity and with a lot of out-of-town guests visiting, they'll be targeting cars parked at or near the stadium.

"Most notably the last home game we saw a big increase in vehicle larceny, car break-ins, also in St. Joe County," said Capt. Phil Trent of the South Bend Police Department.

Trent said victims had two things in common: In most cases they left their doors unlocked and also had valuables exposed.

Trent said people have got to be more careful and not leave anything out in the open.

"That includes change in the center console, things suggesting more property in the vehicle, like iPod earbuds hanging from the rear-view mirror."

He also urges people to double check their doors and make sure they're locked, leave valuables at your home or hotel and lock anything else in the trunk.

"You've got people who are desperate for property and taking advantage of people who are from out of town and have a lot of luggage with them."
