Violence has some parents worried about trick-or-treatingby Kelli Cheatham (kcheatham@wsbt.com)
As kids prepare to trick or treat Friday, some parents say they're concerned about recent violence in South Bend. (WSBT photo) SOUTH BEND — Parents in some South Bend neighborhoods say their kids will not be trick-or-treating near their homes. Even though most of the bullets are flying after kids are fast asleep, some parents say they're not taking any chances on Halloween. It's supposed to be a scary holiday, but recent shooting scenes are too frightening for any parent to handle. "What if my kids were standing there and in the way because somebody else isn't making a good choice?" asked Tricia Martinez. That's why she isn't letting her kids trick-or-treat near their River Park home. "We've decided to go to their dad's neighborhood which is a couple miles away," she said. Martinez isn't alone. Brad Morgan also lives in River Park. He says his girlfriend's three kids are spending Friday far from there. "[We're going where there's] not so much of a threat of anything happening," he said. Police insist trick-or-treating in South Bend won't be dangerous. "We'll have plenty of officers out on the street at that time," said South Bend Police Chief Darryl Boykins at a news conference Wednesday. "And just as long as you went to safe areas, I wouldn't think you'll have any problem." "We encourage parents with young children to travel with those children, to know the houses they're going to," said South Bend Mayor Steve Luecke. There are also several safe indoor places to take your kids on Halloween. For example, the Regency Place senior care center will be open from 6-7 p.m. Friday. But as Tricia Martinez's kids try on their costumes and get ready for the spookiest day of the year, she worries keeping her kids safe on Halloween isn't the end of her problems. "Is it time to move?" she asked. Trick or treating in South Bend is from 5-7 Friday night. Police say you should always use safety precautions, regardless of where you're taking your kids. If you see anything suspicious, don't hesitate to call 911. Most PopularMore Good Stuff |
