The Penn High School Marching Kinsgmen placed sixth Saturday night in the state finals of the Indiana State School Music Association marching band competition at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.

"We had a really good show," said Penn band director Keith Rudolph.

The show "And All the KingsMen" was something they had considered for a couple of years but seemed the perfect program for Penn High School's 50th anniversary this year.

"We tried to depict what's a Kingsmen," he said.

Rudolph was pleased with the progress the band had made, particularly in the final moves, which involved lines passing through each other.

"They had to pass through with confidence, not let off a pace which destroys the lines," he said.

Drum majors, too, could see how much progress the band had made during the year.

Drum major Daniel Burket said, "Looking back at the beginning of the season, we could see how far we've come."

Drum major Keaton Bloom called it a roller-coaster season.

In Class B, Concord finished seventh and Northridge finished 10th.

"Unless you're one, you always wish you were higher," said Concord band director Gay Burton about the finish.

But it was a difficult show, she said, and the band faced setbacks this year.

"It's been kind of rough," said drum major Jordan Cox about the season. "We lost a drumline member."

But the goal of the band from day one of the season had been unity.

And probably nothing was more evident of that than when the band wore wristbands in memory of Blake Varab during the performance.

Northridge, meanwhile, made its third straight appearance in the state finals in Class B.

"Our season has gone really, really well," said Northridge drum major Janice Sienicki, adding that they had a good band and a good, but difficult, show.

"Our band director always writes challenging shows because he knows we can do it," she said.

In Class C, NorthWood finished third.

"It's the best finish we ever had," said band director Gordon Couch. "We knew it was a three-horse race. (Winner) Western was hot and (runner-up) Norwell is always a contender."

He said he was extremely proud of his kids and saw third as a natural progression from last year's sixth-place finish.

Before we know it winter will have come and gone, spring will be here and another school year will have come and gone. Before the next one begins you will see these band members practicing, drilling, sweating to beat the band on a very hot parking lot for very many hours each day after day after day. They are number one in the hearts and minds of those that see them and appreciate that no matter how difficult it seems or how strong the competition may be they don't give up! They are fantastic!
