Angel Food Ministries offers low cost groceriesby Ed Ernstes (ernstes@wsbt.com)
A national program called Angel Food Ministries provides low cost groceries to struggling families. (WSBT photo) GOSHEN — During these tough economic times families are trying to do more to stretch their food dollars. Sometimes pride prevents those in need from going to a food pantry. But there is a new program that allows families to get low cost groceries. Imagine steak, ribs, potatoes and eggs — all in a box of food for $30. Some local families in need are getting that as part of a nationwide program called Angel Food Ministries. The First English Lutheran Church in Goshen is part of that program. "If you order the regular box, it's meant to be enough to feed a family of four for five days or enough to provide 20 meals for an individual," explained Pastor Gene Hollingsworth. Many of the individuals in needs are senior citizens living on a fixed income. Angel Food Ministries is offering many seniors a low-cost 10 meal program. Ordered food is delivered to the church once a month. “It’s almost like going into a store," added Hollingsworth. "You come in, you place your order and pick up exactly what it is that you want." “This program provides folks with good food at a really reasonable price," said program coordinator Rhonda Gibson. "And the menus are predetermined each month.” “Money has gotten tight with everybody," said Naomi Day, a local resident who has used the program. "And this gives you an opportunity to have some different choices in your home and different things to choose from to make dinner for your family.” Organizers say it’s open to any family who is struggling financially during these tough economic times, as well as people on food stamps. "We know that the need is there," Gibson said. There are many other churches in the area involved in the program. To find one near you, go to AngelFoodMinistries.com. It has a been a god send for us. It has saved us about $200 a month. We go to the Calvary Church on Fir road and they are very nice. Unfortunatly, I missed the deadline this month, but will not let that happen again. I spent way to much at the store today,,,,lol. The food is excellent and have not had any issues with any of the food. Very impressive... I want to go and buy on both locations. The one thats offering on line is too expensive but the steak is really a luxury and we need to stack up our fridge for the hungry kids that will come from school ready to eat something. It seems schools are not giving this kids good meals because when they come home they are always hungryr.Wher are they getting their produce from?
