SOUTH BEND — The Army Navy Union in South Bend is dedicating a new mural to honor the country's military men and women this Veterans Day.

Members of the union decided they wanted to do something that would remind people every day, every time they drive by the union, about the men and women who have given their lives for our country.

"We figured that fallen heroes would be a good subject matter because a lot of people don't think about the people who died, " said Dan Reed, who is a member of the union.

The mural was painted on the entire far west wall of the union building located at 1121 West Western in South Bend. It shows all four branches of the military represented by men and woman in uniform, as well as a tank and aircraft carrier.

Artist Dave Blodgett and his wife Linda painted the mural.

"We were excited about doing it because we had an opportunity to remind people every time they drive by this, of the debt we all owe of the American veteran," said Blodgett.

Blodgett said one member of the union even offered his idea on how to make the mural better.

"One of the members suggested a huge flag behind all the images which I thought was a great idea and my wife and i didn't even think about doing that."

Reed says it means a lot to all the members of the union and he hopes the community takes some time to stop and look at the mural.

"It's something everyone should remember every day; not just one day out of the year."

A dedication ceremony will be held Tuesday evening at 5:30 at the union located at 1121 West Western in South Bend.
