SOUTH BEND -- Rising unemployment and increasing numbers of foreclosures have kept debt collectors very busy, but the tough economy hasn't made their jobs any easier.

They're finding many debtors are in the red, just trying to cover the basics -- food, shelter and medical needs.

Debt collectors say the key to financial freedom starts with communication.

"If the debt is not taken care of, neither is the next one," said Jeff Jankowski, attorney with Diamond and Diamond in South Bend.

He says the current economic situation has left many former Michiana workers drowning in debt. If accumulating bills are left ignored, Jankowski said, "It's mistake number one."

"It could leave the wrong impression that they aren't concerned or are ignoring their situation," said Cathy Martin with CBM Accounting. "It gives the impression they could care less about resolving it."

Both Martin and Jankowski believe picking up the phone leaves the best impression.

"Call us," said Jankowski. "Tell us this is the situation."

"At least they feel like someone is taking a small effort at solving their responsibility," said Martin.

"It doesn't go away until it's paid," said Jankowski.

Setting up some sort of payment arrangement with the collector will help pay down debt, building credibility in the process.

"Even a little bit at a time works," said Jankowski.

"Usually if there is an attempt made it's not likely it would fall into the court system," said Martin.

Debt collectors say they are willing to work with people as along as people are willing to work with them. That means being open and honest about your true financial situation, and setting up a realistic payment plan.

The best way to pay your bills is to have a job. Yes some people have over-extended themselves they should have to pay the price. Now, this ugly economy was brought on by the greedy loan campanies who figured they would get rich by handing out morgages to anybody....The moral to all this babble is wake up powers that be and bring manufacturing jobs back to The U.S..

I don't believe it's a felony,,,,, I think its ok if, as long as one person knows that it is being recorded. But I still don't understand why you would record it....

I even tried Credit Counseling and all they did was take my $4000 and walk away laughing!! The best thing I ever did was just ignore the calls. When they call, I hit the button on the speaker phone and walk away until they hang up. Thank goodness our home is not in jeopardy, and I feel for those that are having to deal with that.

Let's see. Layed off. In debt. Hmmmmm. This is news eh? People are in debt who are working. Getting ideas from the tabloids? What a shock to read, "Thousands laid off, all bills paid up to date." I was homeless at one time in my life. Gotta be tough.

That is so nice of the collectors to give tips. I usually tip my waitress 20%, so they want me as a customer and I get better service. How much are these collectors tipping?

Friday, Nov 14 at 12:51 PM Debt Collectors are morons! wrote ...

All I can say is that these 2 collectors they interviewed are full of crap! Creditors don't give a d**n about your situation. They already have it in their minds that we don't give a crap and they continue to harass you if you pay your agreed amount or not! My husband and I are suffering with hours being cut and they don't care-we're trying to keep everyone happy but it just doesn't work. The debt collection agencies can go to hell for all we care!

Friday, Nov 14 at 12:34 PM they lie wrote ...

Yeah the add is a lie. They will work with you at thier terms not yours. when they get nasty with me i record them and replay it back when they call again. i send in every dime i can on a bill if i am behind. if i have 10.00 thats what they get. and when i get more they get more. every one has to pay for utilities and food. most can not even do that. it is bad and they do not care, they have a quota to get to get thier bonus,do not let them talk nasty. hang up on them.communitication threats.

This article is misleading and was written to get all the people in debt to read it, to sell more advertising!

I've been in debt WAY over my head. Had the collections, judgments, threats and legal letters and learned one thing. In a hundred years even THEY won't care about this! Everyone got every cent I owed them. The decent ones got theirs first and the ones who thought they were entitled to my dignity and pride as interest waited. I made mistakes and I paid for them. I am a good person. YOU are probably a GOOD person. God knows who's who and will remember what counts when and where it will count most.

as soon as your income situation changes, call your creditors. The car loan, the credit card, the mortgage company, every one of them. If you've got a good payment history, you can usually work with your creditors directly. If you let it get to collections, you're going to find an entirely different mentality. The truth is that credit providers end up selling these bad debts to the collection agencies at pennies on the dollar. If there's a way they can prevent that writeoff they'll listen.

The credit card companies can lower their interest rates to a reasonable rate along with waving their late charges so people can put a dent in their debt along with mortgages can all be refinance to a low fixed rate. But why won't they? They don't care about you or me. It's that almighty dollar so let them go down like every body else.

Apparently who ever wrote this article has never had to deal with a collection agency. They do not care and trying to explain is useless. Filing bankrupcy if you go chapter 13 is no good either as your payment is almost as high as your bills were before you file. Bill collectors could care less if you have no money they still expect you to send a payment. I would not be surprised if we end up in a major depression like the 30's things are not looking good that is for sure.

I was behind on my mortgage payment by one month due to illness. In 4 more months my home was going to be paid off. 1st Source Bank called and told me to either get caught up within 2 weeks or they would foreclose. After a long drawn out arguement with a very nasty person, they agreed to let me divide the 'behind payment' in half and pay it along with the next two payments. It was then marked as a late paying account. These people don't care what happens to you. Don't trust this article.

Collectors care? Willing to work with you? Where? I was laid of after 21 years on the job. My priorities--Mortgage, gas, electric, food and praying no one gets sick. I tried to work with the credit collectors--I spent 30 minutes on the phone trying to explain my situation and then 10 with her supervisor--I finally hung up. Telling them WHAT I COULD AFFORD to do what unacceptable to them--so no I don't answer the phone.

I can tell you I have picked up the phone and tried to make arrangements, NCO Financial is the absolute worst companies to deal with, unfortunately my only resolve has been turn off the ringer of the phone, and do my best to keep my children fed, and roof over their heads, I don't get assistance from anyone, but these companies don't care what the situation is to hell with you, just give me your money

All I know is that my mortgage company was very rude with me about being late and told me I needed to borrow the money from someone or they would have no choice but foreclose. Who was I going to borrow money from when I'm laid off and my husbands hours have dropped to 32 a week. Everyone I know has bills to pay or are in the same boat. I guess they would rather have a vacant house instead of a majority of the payment. It's not like people are buying up houses right now either.

The mortgage company told us if we would have filed bankruptcy we wouldn't have had to pay all that interest and all that money and would have had a house 2 years after filing. This is BULL! I was so upset at this! I tried so hard to pay off the debt I INCURRED to be told I should have gave up...I would have been better off??? Great! Thanks a hell of a lot! Where was that mortgage guy years ago? And why is this country handling things this way? Help out those who don't take ownership (AGI)!!!

This article IS misleading. Years ago (1994) My husband and I had some difficulties while living out in California and he was in the Navy. Our bills were getting further and further behind. We asked our creditors to work with us and we did this for about 6 years paying off all the debt and interest we incurred. Just to be told 3 more years later that that debt caused us not to be able to buy our house. We were told we by the mortgage comp. we would have been better to file bankruptcy. -cont.-

This article is very misleading. Try making payments to some hospitals. Do you know what they tell you. I am sorry we only take three payments. Nobody chooses to be sick. Medical debt is completely different then other debt. Many medical institutions make it very difficult to make payments. Frankly it made me mad when I read this article. When so many familys are struggling to make it day to day. Wondering how they are going to pay there gas bill. You are right paying a medical bill is tops.

There are SO many people out there in debt, it's unreal. The credit card companies don't even know. The amounts are staggering. We are only beginning to scratch the surface of the financial meltdown. Hang on folks, it's going to be a long, hard, bumpy ride!

Thursday, Nov 13 at 8:15 PM anon wrote ...

I was laid off from my job of 5 years, I was upfront with my mortgage company, told them I was having a hard time making ends meet, and they decided to foreclose on me at being 3 months behind. I understand that they have do what they need to, but I paid what I could afford at the time. So, this article may be somewhat misleading. Talk to the financial inst., find out what they will accept in order to keep it from foreclosure, and then make those payments. Maybe they will work with you??
