MISHAWAKA — Police reported shooting a wounded deer Saturday after it fell into a pond at Autumn Lakes Apartments.

The deer had been shot in the hind legs by a licensed hunter in a nearby woods, police said, and made its way to the apartment complex, which is at 806 Frostfield Drive, on the east side of Indiana 331.

Police said an officer shot the deer because it had lost the use of its back legs and risked drowning in the pond.

Saturday was the opening day of Indiana’s firearms deer hunting season.
