SOUTH BEND — Every time a car honked, they cheered. A group of about 20 people stood at the corner of Main Street and Jefferson Boulevard in downtown South Bend on Saturday, waving signs in support of same-sex marriage.

The rally was a reaction to the passage this month of same-sex marriage bans in four different states, the most notable of which was California.

California’s Proposition 8 overturned a state Supreme Court ruling that allowed for same-sex marriages.

“It sets a precedent,” said Mandy Studdard, who helped organize the South Bend rally. “People say ‘If the rest of the country doesn’t want this, why should we have it here?’ We’ve got to set a different precedent. That’s not how it’s supposed to be.”

South Bend’s event — where people held signs with slogans such as “No taxation w/o marriage” and “Don’t be gaycist” — coincided with marriage rallies across the country Saturday.

“People should be allowed to be in relationships and be married no matter what their gender,” said Bernie Dolezal, who held a paper flag with the U.S. stars and stripes motif on one half and rainbow stripes on the other.
