PAW PAW — Two people were injured and treated at the scene of an early Sunday morning one-vehicle accident in Paw Paw, the Van Buren County Sheriff's Department reported.

Rebeca Lopez, 20, and a passenger were injured after their vehicle struck a residential mailbox and rolled into a yard. Lopez had swerved to avoid hitting three deer that ran in front of her car.

Lopez received minor seat belt burns to her chest, officials said, but she refused medical treatment.

Luis Barajas-Saucedo, 24, of South Haven, had heavy facial bleeding and a possible broken leg, and was treated at the scene, authorities said.

The accident happened at about 5:13 a.m. Sunday, when deputies were dispatched to County Road 380 and 72nd Street in Paw Paw.

Lopez was headed west on County Road 380 in a Buick LeSabre when three deer ran in front of her vehicle, officials said.

When Lopez swerved to miss the deer, her vehicle went off the road and struck a mailbox, causing the vehicle to roll about three times. Lopez was wearing her seatbelt at the time of the accident, but officials said Barajas-Saucedo was not, and was thrown through the window and landed in a yard.

The South Haven EMS, South Haven Fire Department, and Covert Police Department assisted at the accident scene.
