SOUTH BEND — Road construction slowed firefighters’ response to a fire Monday, but crews still arrived in time to quell the flames and save the chickens.

The fire, reported about 1:30 p.m., was in a small chicken coop in the yard of a home at 56530 Quince Road, a few miles west of South Bend.

Crews from the Warren Township Fire Department initially had difficulty reaching the scene because road construction closed Quince.

Fire trucks responding from the north had to take a route several miles out of their way.

Despite the detour, firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze, which damaged the shed and some tools stored inside.

All of the chickens were alive and accounted for, firefighters said.
