A man who stopped to help at a Noble County accident scene Monday was in critical condition after he, too, was injured when a second driver couldn't stop on the ice.

The Noble County Sheriff's Department said Dale Kizer, 46, of Fort Wayne, stopped on U.S. 6 near Kendallville, Ind., when he came across a car on its side on the north side of the highway.

Kizer went to assist Ruth Ann Smith, 66, of Kendallville, who was still in her 2004 Chevrolet Tracker.

He was joined by the unidentified driver of a tow truck who was en route to another crash but also stopped to help.

Police said that's when Patricia Hammel, 74, also of Kendallville, crested the hill as she headed west on U.S. 6, saw the wrecker in the road and couldn't stop.

Hammel told police she headed her 2003 Saturn Vue for the ditch instead of the truck, but didn't see Smith's vehicle or Kizer standing near it.

Kizer was struck first, and then Smith's Tracker, with the second impact collapsing the Tracker's roof.

Noble County authorities said Kizer and Smith were flown to Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne for their injuries.

Hospital staff told SBT24/7 News that Kizer was in critical condition Tuesday, while Smith remained in serious condition.

There were no reports of injuries to Hammel or her passenger, 79-year-old Richard Hammel, also of Kendallville.
