Icy conditions cause I-94 closure west of South BendSBT24/7 News ReportSOUTH BEND — The National Weather Service has canceled the lake-effect snow warning for St. Joseph County, but it remains in effect until 1 p.m. EST Tuesday for Berrien County in Michigan, and LaPorte, Starke, Porter and Lake counties in Indiana. Snow totals in excess of 12 inches are still possible in parts of LaPorte and Berrien counties, the NWS said in a 1:16 a.m. update. Some areas west of South Bend were especially hard-hit by weather, and about 25 miles of eastbound Interstate 80 and 94 was closed for several hours early Tuesday. The Indiana State Police at Lowell Post said the eastbound lanes were closed between the Porter and Michigan City exits because of ice. Traffic was detoured onto U.S. 20, ISP said, until the road was reopened a few hours later. Meanwhile, accidents in the open westbound lanes were slowing traffic, too. Packages were strewn across the highway shortly after 1 a.m. when a United Parcel Service truck was involved in a collision, ISP said. Elsewhere, Toll Road officials said travel was hazardous between Rolling Prairie and Mishawaka. Officials reported a number of slide-offs but no serious injuries with any accidents. That was the case across southwest Michigan and northern Indiana, including LaPorte County, where highway crews were busy trying to clear roads of snow and ice, and Pulaski County, where U.S. 421 was reported as hazardous. In addition to the Toll Road and I-94, the weather service warned that visibility along U.S. 30 will drop to near zero as 2 to 3 inches of snow per hour are possible. "It's still a very cold air mass," said meteorologist Mike Skipper with the National Weather Service office in northern Indiana early Tuesday. "Now, we're seeing it come back, reorienting itself," he said, adding that LaPorte County was in a direct line to receive more heavy bands. Lake-effect snow is expected through morning in LaPorte and Berrien counties. A snow advisory remains in effect for Marshall, Porter, Pulaski and Fulton counties in Indiana.
