Two accidents along Michigan 51 sent six people to area hospitals Monday.

The Cass County Sheriff's Office said the first crash happened about 7:35 a.m. near Swamp Street in Wayne Twp. after Janet Caldwell-Rhoton, 39, of Decatur, lost control of a southbound vehicle and crossed the centerline.

She collided with Annatha Coffy, 53, of Dowagiac, who was driving north.

Both drivers were injured and trapped in their vehicles, authorities said.

They were extricated and taken to Borgess Lee Memorial Hospital in Dowagiac.

Seat belts were used, and alcohol was not a factor in the crash.

Then, just before noon, two vehicles collided at Michigan 51 and Commercial Street in Pokagon Twp.

Deputies said Veleta Covington, 53, of Niles, was unable to stop at a stop sign and slid into the path of the second vehicle, driven by Erin Adams, 33, of Dowagiac.

Adams and her passenger, John Adams, 40, also of Dowagiac, were taken to Borgess Lee Memorial.

Covington and her passenger, 47-year-old Anita Liles of Niles, were extricated from her vehicle after it came to rest on a guard rail.

Covington was taken to Lakeland Hospital in Niles, while Liles was taken to Memorial Hospital in South Bend.
