Two accidents along Michigan 51 sent six people to area hospitals Monday.

The Cass County Sheriff's Office said the first crash happened about 7:35 a.m. near Swamp Street in Wayne Twp. after Janet Caldwell-Rhoton, 39, of Decatur, lost control of a southbound vehicle and crossed the centerline.

She collided with Annatha Coffy, 53, of Dowagiac, who was driving north.

Both drivers were injured and trapped in their vehicles, authorities said.

They were extricated and taken to Borgess Lee Memorial Hospital in Dowagiac.

Seat belts were used, and alcohol was not a factor in the crash.

Then, just before noon, two vehicles collided at Michigan 51 and Commercial Street in Pokagon Twp.

Deputies said Veleta Covington, 53, of Niles, was unable to stop at a stop sign and slid into the path of the second vehicle, driven by Erin Adams, 33, of Dowagiac.

Adams and her passenger, John Adams, 40, also of Dowagiac, were taken to Borgess Lee Memorial.

Covington and her passenger, 47-year-old Anita Liles of Niles, were extricated from her vehicle after it came to rest on a guard rail.

Covington was taken to Lakeland Hospital in Niles, while Liles was taken to Memorial Hospital in South Bend.

Folks, here's a tip when things are slick, put a egg on your gas pedal and the brake pedal, if you break either egg, you're driving too hard and wasting gas. Simple huh? Take your time, there's people worth living for...sure I get alot of tailgaters, but that's NOT my problem!

With a little research, you'll discover all two-lane state highways in Michigan are 55 MPH. You'll see higher speeds on Interstate-grade roads only, like M-6 near Grand Rapids and M-14 heading east out of Ann Arbor. Ever notice that people who drive slower than you are idiots, and those who drive faster than you are maniacs? *grin*

Carol, where on M51 does the spped sign say 65?? It is 55 unless posted otherwise (In Cass County it is slower, not faster) Use some common sense people-snow comes every year!

So you guys are the slow pokes that are getting in my way. A little snow also doesn't mean you have to do 25 on a state highway either.

Quit yelling CAROL and what does "ALITTE" mean? Seriously, in Indiana, this white stuff comes every single year...people need to realize it's no longer July. Why is it, every single year people "forget" how to drive in the ice and snow?
