BOURBON — Classes began Wednesday morning at Triton Jr.-Sr. High School with a heavy presence of law enforcement after three death threats promised action that day.

Officers from Bourbon, Marshall County and Indiana State Police watched over the peaceful start to the school day at the school. Parents were asked to drop children off and then move on. Parents were not allowed in the school.

Superintendent Carl Hilling was at the high school as well, to assist with as normal a start to the day as possible.

Few vehicles were in the parking lot, however, indicating a lower than normal student turnout.

Officials are to provide an overview of the day at a news conference later.

Hilling and Bourbon Police Chief John West , assisted by at least three other law enforcement agencies, began investigating the first of three death threats found after the school was open to the public for voting in the general election Nov. 4. A threat of killing was found in a school restroom that evening. Two additional threats were discovered later.

Hilling said parents and students have been helpful in the investigation, but he was not immediately available in the morning for additional comment. West, too, was at the high school with other officers but could not immediately comment.

My child did attend school today at Triton. I felt very safe sending him considering the strong police presence. I am grateful for all the assistance that the local police received. My concern is more for the future. If someone really wanted to do harm I don't believe they would have announced the date. That being said, I still believe Triton is a great school, and I thank the administration and staff for their dedication to our children.

I don't know how wise it is to use the word "wake" in the title of your article, when it's about death threats...unless you're trying to be funny.

John West couldn't find his way out of a wet paper bag with both hands and a flashlight. It's a good thing the MCSD is there, especially 5-04 and the ISP are there to take care of the situation.

Once they find the person responsible, I hope a heavy consequence will be handed down. This has taken way too much time for the administrators and our law enforcement to have to deal with.

It's too bad one or two people have taken control and stolen an educational day from so many. Schools should be a safe place to be, not a place where you need to go through metal detectors, past police officers, and security in general in order to get to class.
