The National Weather Service has issued a lake-effect snow watch for much of Michiana beginning Thursday morning and lasting through Friday evening.

The watch area includes LaPorte, St. Joseph and Elkhart counties in Indiana, and Berrien and Cass counties in Michigan.

After a cold front sweeps through the area late tonight, cold winds across the warmer waters of Lake Michigan are expected to cause widespread snow showers across much of the area, especially north and west of a line from Michigan City to Nappanee to Marcellus.

Total accumulations in that area could reach six to 12 inches by Friday evening, although snow totals will likely vary widely due to the localized nature of lake-effect snow.
