SOUTH BEND — A suspected car thief suffered minor abrasions after he was struck with a Taser while attempting to run from police.

According to Capt. Phil Trent, an officer spotted a stolen gold Chevrolet in the parking lot of the Belleville Shopping Center in the 4600 block of Western Avenue shortly before 12:30 p.m. Wednesday.

When the officer attempted to pull over the car, the driver jumped out and tried to run away. Police gave chase on foot, and the man was struck with a Taser, causing him to fall to the ground.

The suspect was taken to a local hospital for treatment. Upon release, he is expected to be booked on auto theft charges, police said.
