SOUTH BEND — IU South Bend students are meeting to talk about their safety. Some are worried after three shootings near campus in the past month.

The Student Government Association President told WSBT he wants to get a general idea from the student body about whether they feel safe near campus.

"I feel completely safe on campus," said IU South Bend student Maureen Pickar.

"I'm not too worried right now," echoed Jim Chodzinski.

But there are other students who say recent shootings so close to campus are making them uneasy.

"I'm going to be a little bit more careful," said IU South Bend student Jacob Denning.

That's why the Student Government Association is holding town hall meetings, giving everyone a chance to voice their concerns.

"We have people who live here for the first time," explained student body President Dane Blue. "We want to make sure that those three or 400 students over there, this is their home and we want them to feel safe."

Two concerns Blue said he's hearing a lot — students want more emergency phones and more lighting on and around campus.

"It's the responsibility of IU and the city of South Bend to make sure that our students are safe and feel safe. It's my job to inform them of how the students feel," he said.

Some students say they want the university to be more pro-active when it comes to letting them know about crime, even when the crimes aren't being committed on campus.

"I think there should be just kind of a higher alert," said Jacob Denning. "That would've been nice getting an e-mail to know about it."

Blue said the University doesn't want to over use its campus-wide e-mail alert system. Those e-mails are supposed to alert students when their safety may be in danger. But Blue explained the university doesn't feel recent shootings fell under that criteria.

"A situation like that happened Sunday [at] 3 a.m., the safety of all the students wasn't in danger," he said. "So to send out an alert like that, or an alert when that's not the case, we don't want to overuse the system."

Blue says he talked with the IU South Bend police chief about the possibility of getting a text alert system for students who live on campus, rather than an alert for all 7,700 students.

Students will have plenty of opportunities to voice their opinions to the Student Government Association. There will be more meetings in the coming months and the association has booths set up around campus.

Um, that's not security IUSB Student---that's IUSB parking people that put out the signs. Secondly, there are security phones in the buildings, several around campus. Should there be more outside? Yes. I'll agree there. Secondly, I'm on campus at night routinely. I see the campus cops. And here's the thing, IUSB student, you can call them and they'll escort you to your car. FYI: I'm a student and I'm on campus at least 40 hours a week. I see more campus cops than janitorial staff.

Cut the crap. There are maybe 3 emergency phones on campus. Lighting is awful. And I have never seen security out in the evening. The only time I see security out is during the day putting up "lot full" signs

You must be blind. I see campus security all the time on campus walking around.

It's not the governments job to keep anyone safe so say the courts. That's why I carry a sidearm. I keep myself safe. Too bad these young adults (yes they're adults not "kids") don't get that chance. Because licensed or not, you can't have a weapon on campus.

Enough of the religious hosh posh. As a current student at IUSB, I try to park as close to where I'll be leaving at night, since I don't want to walk too far in the dark. I've NEVER seen campus security walking outside or even in the buildings at night.

What are you talking about Gill. I saw you there at 3 am looking like an old rug. Drunk. Why students drink so much? Are they failing in their courses or cant find the right girl? If you are drunk somone is gona rob you and punch you. So stop drinking and be filled with the power of the Holy Ghost. Then all your drinking problems will be gone and you will be able to heal people in the name of Jesus and many will come to realize that heaven and earth will pass away but His word will never pass aw

I agree with Sister Meredith. I close my eyes, but only for a moment. All of my dreams pass before my eyes with curiosity. It's just dust in the wind.

We all live in fear. Fear of something is gona happen. Jesus said those who trust in me will have no fear at all. Why we fear so much? It is not normal for individuals specially students to fear. Trust in God and all your fear will be gone. Here today and gone tomorrow. That is our lives. We are like smoke in the dessert of life. We see it for a while .. then it is gone forever. So dont fear too much. Trust the living God to save you from all fear. Dear St. Priscila intercede for us and help us
