SOUTH BEND — In what one witness described as "what you would see in the movies," a car on Wednesday hit a concrete barrier, rolled over in the air and landed on its roof in front of a home on the city’s near northwest side.

According to witnesses, about 9:27 p.m., the maroon Chevrolet Lumina was speeding west in the 1000 block of West Angela Boulevard when it failed to negotiate a slight curve near Woodward Avenue.

The vehicle struck a low concrete barrier on the north side of the road, witnesses said. It rolled as it flew through the air, clipping the top of an approximately 6-foot-tall fence before landing upside down just feet from the front door of a home at the northeast corner of Woodward and Angela.

Renee Scott of South Bend, who was traveling in front of the Lumina, witnessed the crash in her rearview mirror.

"I saw the car swerving from lane to lane," she said. "He accelerated and I told my son, ‘Hold on, hold on, he’s gonna hit us.’"

"The car was completely in the air, flipped over," said Brenda Farmwald of South Bend, who was traveling behind the vehicle. "It was like what you see in the movies."

Paramedics had to break the car’s back window to get to the driver, who was combative throughout the ordeal, screaming loudly and incoherently at medical personnel.

He was taken to the hospital with unknown injuries.

As police investigated, two open beer cans could be seen lying on the sidewalk outside the driver’s side window, along with other debris from the crash.

The cause of the crash is still undetermined.
