Detectives from Cass and Van Buren counties have identified a suspect in the killing of a migrant farm worker.

According to a joint report released by the sheriff’s departments in both counties, Lazaro Lopez-Perales, 34, has been identified by Cass County Prosecutor Victor Fitz as a suspect in the slaying. Fitz has authorized an arrest warrant for open murder in the case.

The victim, Miguel Angel Perez-Calixto, 35, is believed to have been shot at a seasonal housing camp in Wayne Township in Cass County, possibly sometime in early September. The victim is then believed to have been moved from that location in Cass County to a bean field in Van Buren County, where his body was discovered by a local farmer.

The homicide investigation now falls under the jurisdiction of the Cass County Sheriff and Prosecutors Office for prosecution. Detectives from both counties continue the investigation into Perez-Calixto’s death.
