MISHAWAKA — A big snowfall slowed morning commuters and shut down several schools across Michiana.

The largest amount of snow appears to have fallen in Stevensville, Michigan with 11 inches, and at 8:20 this morning it was still coming down. In Northern Indiana anywhere from 7-8 inches of snow fell, according to WSBT Meteorologist Cari Peugeot.

Before the commute, law enforcement officials said there were very few accidents in the Michiana area. Officials with the Toll Road reported a few slide-offs overnight, but nothing major.

As the commute got under way, officials reported more and more minor fender-benders, but expected it to be a busy morning.

Drivers said the roads were clear, but very slick.

Cynthia Chrapliwy said it didn't take her long to slow down.

"I just came a few blocks and already I slid into the bank, so it's slick — there's a lot of ice underneath the snow," she said.

Nathan Cole agreed, saying his friend picked him up and they almost got hit near the new underpass on Main Street in Mishawaka.

"The roads were pretty slick, we almost had a car come back into us at the new underpass at Main Street because of that steep hill there," he said. "Other than that it wasn't too bad."

Mike Degeyter witnessed a near-miss as well.

"I did see someone standing at the bus that a car did almost slide into, so people waiting for the bus have to watch the cars because there is black ice on the intersections," said Degeyter.

Why in the world would an underpass be designed with a steep incline? Don't the so called engineers realize we get snow and ice and can't afford Hummers.

What is wrong with people today? I leave early for work when the roads are neglected. I then, can drive a safe slow speed. But always, some rude IDIOT has to be right behind me, because I can't go fast enough. Too bad. I drive the speed that is safe for what the road condition is at that time. I never got over 35 this morning, the roads were glare ice. Got to work on time and didn't wreck it. When it's bad, use your heads, and leave earlier and slow down a bit. Life is short!

If you dont like the snow then.. you to Cancun or the Marianna Islands where there is plenty of sun and all the girls you want to see in bikini. Even the Forida Keys are a nice place to be. And if you isnt got a job .. then the hotels and all the vacation spots will hire you as an attendant or as waitress. they need help of all kinds and no snow plows to wait for the clean up nor the salt trucks that never arrive to melt all the tons and tons of snow. God only knows when this thing will end.

Imagine that. Idiots make the news again because they can't slow down when the snow falls.
