STEVENSVILLE, Mich. — Lincoln Charter Township Police report a man was struck and killed at 8 p.m. Friday by an Amtrak passenger train just south of Marquette Woods Road.

Two Amtrak engineers told police the train was northbound near the St. Joseph Avenue crossing when a man was walking down the center of the track and appeared to ignore repeated horn blasts by the train’s engineer. The engineer attempted to stop the train, but could not do so before striking the man. Police said the train's speed was 65 mph, a legal speed for that area of track.

The man’s identity has not yet been released by police.

No passengers or train employees were injured. The train later continued its trip to Grand Rapids.

I was on the train. Shame that poor person was in the state of mind to do that to himself - he was walking down the middle of the track and obviously planned it. I feel even sorrier for the Engineer that had to watch the even unfold and the Train Conductors who had to trudge through the snow and go Identify what was left of who was hit. Also two thumbs up to the inconvenienced passengers who waited so patiently for 2 1/2 hours while the train sat at the scene. Why should Amtrak have to pay BTW ?

Why should Amtrack have to pay for this individuals funeral?? Amtrack didn't MAKE him walk on the tracks. He obviously wanted to be there. And, I'm sorry, but I've read in the paper the train sounded it's horn more than enough times to make this person move. How can you NOT hear a train horn? Even if you are listening to an iPod or something, you can't tell me you won't hear it. I live a MILE from tracks and hear the trains all the time! I'd certainly hear one if it was coming up behind me

It cost so much to get an education but when yu are dead like this unfortunate individual Amtrack should take care of all the expenses for the burial and the holy mass that should be offered for the dead so he can reach heaven and enjoy an eternity with God himself. That will be a good deed for the dead. Dont you thi

Oh. They left the dead person right there?¿ Amtrack should have take him to Grand Rapids for the wake and burial of this poor soul that lost his life in an unfortunate way. Pastor Mel, is he is heaven now? or should we wait for the last trumpet at the last minute when all eyes shall look at him coming down from heaven and taking us all to be with for ever and ever Amen. Thank your your wonderful post. It is always inspiring to hear some eternal issues exposed for us all. My condolences to the fa

:53 PM Anonymous - Sometimes people hit the wrong keys and don't realize it until the submit button has been clicked. Look at your keyboard and notice that S is next to D, hence deceased could become deseaded. Now go do something besides complain about someone's spelling.

Pastor Mel is it? excuse me sir, but you might want to turn on spell check. The misspelled words in your comments are 4th grade level. This is a very unfortunate accident. I am sorry for the family's loss. My prayers are with you.

Thats sad.. obviously that person had demons bothering him. I know we have places that can help people like that, but those places need to welcome people in need better, rather then make them look like freaks.
