SOUTH BEND – The city redevelopment commission voted to enter a new agreement with South Bend Heritage Foundation on revitalization work in the West Washington Street Tax Increment Financing district.

The agreement rolls over some 2008 TIF money to next year to pay for renovations to the former natatorium. The building is being renovated for a Civil Rights Heritage Center.

Don Inks, economic development director, said Friday that about $370,000 in TIF will also be budgeted for joint projects yet to be identified between the city and South Bend Heritage. He said the commission approved $450,000 in TIF money in February for the natatorium, but unforeseen construction costs have caused an increase.

The commission also approved a $1 million development agreement with WNIT to help pay for a new building facade. The project was announced in May. WNIT will move to 300 W. Jefferson Blvd., which is the former home of WSBT-TV.

Inks also reported that the former South Bend Lathe Building wall on Sample Street has now been torn down.
