SOUTH BEND — One tackle that occurred Saturday in Notre Dame Stadium won’t be listed in the official game statistics.

A 67-year-old University of Notre Dame usher chased and tackled a 37-year-old fan from Toronto after the man refused to heed an order not to enter the stadium, according to a city police report.

The 37-year-old man attended the Notre Dame-Syracuse game and exited the stadium at halftime, although he was warned by gatekeepers that anyone who leaves is not allowed to re-enter, police said.

About 5:30 p.m., the man appeared at a gate and insisted he be allowed back in the stadium, saying he needed to meet some relatives who were inside, according to police. The man started yelling and appeared to be inebriated, police said.

The man pushed his way past the gate and ran into the stadium, and an usher ran after him and pulled him to the ground, police said. Two South Bend police officers were called to restrain the man and place him in handcuffs.

The man was shouting to passers-by that they should take photos and video of the police brutality, according to a police report.

The man was arrested on preliminary charges of battery, resisting law enforcement, public intoxication and disorderly conduct, and taken to the St. Joseph County Jail.
