SOUTH BEND — A county police officer was uninjured Monday night after he crashed his squad car avoiding a deer, police said.

According to St. Joseph County police, the officer was traveling north on Indiana 23, just west of Mayflower Road, about 9:30 p.m. when a deer ran in front of his car.

The officer braked and swerved, police said, and his car spun and struck a low concrete wall on the south side of the road.

The deer reportedly was not hit.

The car sustained minor front end damage, including the loss of its front bumper.
