SOUTH BEND — A weak economy seems to once again be affecting the efforts of a group trying to help those in need.

Coats for Kids says it needs more coats.

"It has been a slow year for coat donation," said Jennifer Probst, the retail sales director for Ziker Cleaners.

Each year Ziker runs Coats for Kids, taking in gently used coats, cleaning them and then giving them to local schools in South Bend, Mishawaka, Elkhart and Goshen for children who need a new winter coat.

This is the 22nd year of the drive, but clearly one of the slower years.

"I think the economy plays part of it," said Probst. "It's a little bit slower, but we all have children who outgrow their coats and so we just need to go through our closets and clean them out."

You can drop off any coat donation at any Ziker Location until December 6.

Since 1986, Ziker has collected and distributed approximately 200,000 coats.
