NILES — Didn’t get your street plowed recently to your satisfaction? If you live in the city of Niles, there’s a reason.

Niles Public Works Director Neil Coulston said Monday a decline in fuel tax and vehicle registration revenues, coupled with a dramatic increase in salt prices, have curtailed snow-plowing and street-salting operations in Niles.

As a result, less salt will be applied than in past years, Coulston said, and Street Department employees called in after hours won’t complete plowing streets curb to curb until their normal daytime shifts.

“These cuts are being forced on us due to the current poor economic conditions but we are committed to doing the best job possible with the funds … available to us,” he said.
