DOWAGIAC — Police and dozens of school officials were out in force Wednesday morning following a bomb threat at Dowagiac Middle School.

"We take these things very seriously," Police Chief Tom Atkinson said, but added that the risk was relatively low to students.

Earlier in the week, school officials found a faintly written bomb threat, referring to Wednesday's date, on the walls of two bathrooms, Atkinson said.

"You had to look for it to see it," he said about the scribbled warning.

He said school officials did not know when the threat was written, but school and police followed protocol.

Safety measures included police sweeping the school to ensure no actual bombs were planted. Also school officials sent a letter home to parents notifying them of the threat, Atkinson said.

Police continue to investigate who wrote the threats, he said.

Meanwhile students attended only a half day of classes because of the Thanksgiving Day holiday.
