MISHAWAKA — Some shoppers decided not to wait until Black Friday for their bargains; instead they headed to local stores offering doorbuster deals Thursday.

At Meijer some people started waiting in line at midnight for deals on HDTVs and iPods. Others trickled in Thursday morning to grab half-priced toys.

The store manager at the Meijer on 331 in Mishawaka said the Thanksgiving Day doorbuster sale was a big hit.

"In earlier years when we opened on Thanksgiving it was kind of quiet and we thought what the heck, if we're open let's give some great bargains and create some excitement," he said. "So it worked pretty well."

This year, it's clear people are looking for bargains.

Tina Dougherty, who lives in South Bend, said she was laid off a year ago from an Elkhart RV company.

Dougherty says she has no choice but to clip coupons and shop the sales.

"My husband tells me they are going to kick me out because I get so many things for practically nothing!" she said.

She's not the only one. Michelle Dewey saw Thursday's sale at Meijer and decided to take advantage.

"Everything in my cart is on the doorbuster ad — everything," she said.

Rick Zeef says shoppers are more thrifty than ever.

"It appears people are bargain hunting very well," he said. "They are comparing ads, looking online and they are going for the bargains."

He also says based on the lines he saw Thursday he expects Black Friday to be just as busy as last year with everyone looking to save.

I would not for the life of me go shopping today. Rude people, not the best ads and they always just happen to be out of EVERYTHING you want anyways. I would rather cut my throat. I set at home with my little lap top and got just as many good deals. I had to pay shipping but it's the same as gas money and well worth not having to put up with the idiots.

Confusion are you still in line in the cold trying to get those coats that you like.. I mean the green ones so you can look like the green grass that is covered with snow? Those car lots are full. You have to wait till everyone took what they wanted for 99 cents and then the left overs will be thrown all over the floor. Poor employees they have to clean up all that mess the crazy customers leave after they brouse all the lines are all over the floor. My wife could not get through. Hire more peop

MM, you should have seen the well, scenes at the WalMart in Plymouth. Absolutely crazy. I can truly say, I have never wanted anything that badly in my life. I'll wait, spend 5 or 10$ more and get it later. Although, they didn't have anything in their ad that thrilled me too much, either.

wouldn't go into the meijer on portage this morning because it had a car lot full of people before 6am.99 cent miracle whip was the best bargain in their ads.
