Mishawaka police are investigating the death of a 5-year-old boy who was electrocuted after crawling into a transformer box between Mishawaka apartment complexes along North Main Street.

Police say Izaya Michael Baiz-Hickey was shocked around 5 p.m. Thursday when he grabbed circuitry inside the transformer box.

Eric Uitdenhowen, who heads the electrical division of the Mishawaka Public Utilities, says he does not know if the transformer box was locked.

The power was turned off for the entire grid serviced by the transformer, which includes the Williamsburg on the Lake and Carriage House apartment complexes, so that the death could be safely investigated, said Mike Samp, Mishawaka Police assistant chief. The transformer box is between the two complexes.

No other information is available at this time.
