MISHAWAKA — The official start of the holiday shopping season got under way Friday morning. Shoppers arrived at local retailers as early as 4 a.m. to get what are typically considered the best deals of the season.

At Kohl's on Main Street in Mishawaka, a long line formed in both directions from the entrance.

Several people said this was their first time shopping on Black Friday.

Aaron Tobias and his wife said they have never done this before, but came to save on Barbies. The economy was a factor in their early morning decision.

"This is the first year we've done it to get the sales and so we can save an extra little bit of money," said Aaron.

He wasn't alone in line.

Tony Wantuch said he had never joined his wife for her post-Thanksgiving Day shopping adventure.

"We wanted to get out here and get some good savings," said Tony.

Sharon said he wasn't completely on board.

"I drug him out of bed to come with me," she said.

There was also a long line snaked around the Best Buy in Mishawaka.

Lisa Luckey had been waiting since 7 o’clock Thursday night for an XBOX 360 for her son.

She says her budget was the motivating factor.

"Huge part, uh yeah, good deals, good sales — that will bring me out."

Even after waiting outside for hours, many at Best Buy then waited hours inside for computers.

Jim Richey, like most people, is tightening his budget and said the good deals are worth the wait.

"It's like a $300 savings," he said. "So you’re saving quite a bit of money."

Managers at local stores were relieved to see the long lines.

Kevin Klodzinski has worked at best Buy for 10 years, and says this year compares well with last.

"Building up to this day it's been tension, and this day has proved there's nothing really to worry about. It's good," he said.

Good at least for now. It will take days before retailers know if Black Friday will help boost sales during an otherwise tough retail economy.

I think a lot of people are using credit cards with the intention of defaulting on them.. who is to blame them... the big corporation are doing it. Thier is nothing wrong with the econony.. the rich still have money.. and they will put it back in wall street as long as they can get a profit out of it... a lot of people have lost their jobs.. and hopefully they will maintain thier dignity and not over spent.. because if you only make a dollar you should not be charging 5 dollars.. God Bless

While some people were happy saving some money on black friday, some others died in the crowd, because of crazy, stupid and selfish shoppers who didn't even care about those persons on the floor. They preferred to walk on them, to hit them, just to be the first ones saving an extra 50$ on an item. Just disgusting. I think there are enough sales during the whole year to make everybody happy. Black friday is just another reason for fighting, shooting and killing others...it should stop!!!

Don't you shoppers realize the only things on sale are the items that are old stock or outdated electronics. You could've gotten the same laptop or whatever by asking the manager for a better price. It's a dirty little secret that retailers won't tell you about. Black Friday is a good way for retailers to rid themselves of yesterdays technology and other items consumers would'nt touch during the past year. Lemmings, do yourselves a favor and WISEN UP.

Not only did I put it on the charge card, but I have no intention of paying it back! You heard me. I'm just going to keep running up the bills until there's no way anyone could ever hope to get out of the hole I dug, then I'm going to ask the government for a bailout. Hey, it worked for AIG.

People are forgetting what Thanksgiving is all about. They skip their Thanksgiving dinner with family and friends just to be at stores at 4 am. Even though the economy is bad, people are forgetting that there is alot to be thankful for. It doesn't matter how many Christmas presents are under the tree, it's that they are remembered and what Christmas is all about.

Did you not hear that the more you charge that the credit card companies are going to increase your rates and they are doing this , they have the right to change them at any time even if they are fixed so better be checking that out and find a "GREAT JOB" so you dont need credit. So that us that do have great paying jobs dont have to pay for you welfare someday!!!!

So what it comes down to, is whoever has the most under the tree wins...In ten years or even less, people, are your children who got the $700 PlayStation, the $35 Barbie Doll, the One Million Dollar whatever, remember it? It will be broken, or tossed out. It's ridiculous. "I want my children to have happy childhood memories". Well, you know what? When I was growing up, we had almost nothing under the tree. The fondest memory I have was watching "A Christmas Carol" with my folks...

I worked at Kohl's for 4 years while I was in college. The deals are NOT that great on Black Friday but people freak out over them! The real prices will begin a few weeks from now, at least at Kohl's and the same goes for Penney's. It's just as bad as those people thinking Kohl's "Buy 1, Get 1 Free" deal's are better than sale prices... Also, if any of you understand how the economy works, people need to spend a little. That's why after 9/11 they encouraged spending idiots!

Black Friday..the joke will be on you when the credit card company raises your interest rate for running up you balance. They can and are doing it now. "Idiot" I don't think your an idiot at all..don't know you to make that conclusion. All's I know is you can't do simple subtraction to figure out how much you saved.

I was standing at four o clock in the morning in the cold and the line was so long that I could not see the end of it. And people kept coming in. The lot has gotten full in no time. Why is all this rampage going on at an early hours of the day? Bargains and more bargains. What a way to get peoples money and get them rolling in to spend all they can. Shop till you drop is right. Keep shopping for items that you dont need and at the end youll find yourself broke. The credit card all max out. No

I agree with Todd, who by the way is making a true statement. He didn't say ALL people, but you can bet there will be many that should not be doing it. I have supported Todd in an earlier statement that for some reason that defies explanation does not seem to be getting printed. I wish I new what the medias criteria is for these forums. I can appreciate omitting objectionable contributions but nothing could have been farther from the case in either of mine that have not shown up. It's ridiculous

Todd what business is it of yours how a person buy the goods or spent their hard earned money? I was at Walmart at 12:08am, got myself a Laptop and Desktop and a TV. O yeah I forgot about the Flash Drive, and the printer. I then swung around to Kohl's, and got myself a Digital Photo Album. I swiped that credit card like nothing to it. I just love the fact that I am blessed to have good credit and a good job. To pay my bill's. It ain't our fault you could not shop today, worried about tomorrow.

I have a feeling there will be even better deals than what could be found today in about two weeks when they see consumer spending is down.

The following is an account of what took place at a Long Island WalMart this morning at 5AM."He was bum-rushed by 200 people," co-worker Jimmy Overby, 43, told the Daily News. "They took the doors off the hinges. He was trampled and killed in front of me. They took me down too. ... I literally had to fight people off my back." WSBT, would it be possible to publish the comment I made on this site about mid morning? There was nothing offensive about it and I think the above incident confirms it.

Heck, I got 2 wide screen TV's for $650 each that normally sell for $1000. Yeah, I put them on my charge card, but $800 in savings makes for a lot of credit card interest. I guess I'm an idiot, but I think there's a difference between abusing credit and using it wisely. Besides, I'll pay my cards off when Obama gives me more money for being poor. HOORAY!

Friday, Nov 28 at 2:13 PM jeff wrote ...

I just wonder why they have to whip every one into a frenzy? Have the sales, but why so early and for such a short time. 4AM??? Too bad the retailors success has to be won or lost at such an expense and at a time when spending isn't even the reason for the season.

Todd, not all of us are idiots. Yes, there are many, but I am happy to say I paid CASH and got some great deals today. What is good for one is not always for the other.

This is totally senseless. People are going to go out and charge up their credit cards and be further in debt. Great way to destroy our economy even further.
