Couple killed in Lake County accident

LOWELL— A Merrillville couple were killed Thanksgiving night in a single-vehicle accident on Interstate 65 near Lowell.

Sherry Orton, 45, and her husband Thomas Orton, 47, were northbound when their SUV crossed the median and rolled several times before coming to rest in the southbound lanes, according to State Police. Neither was wearing a seat belt and both were ejected from the vehicle, according to police.

Police are investigating the cause of the crash.

The chances that you survive an accident while wearing a seatbelt FAR outweight the chances that you will die in an accident beacause you were wearing one. There will always be those few that use the excuse "Pook Pook" stated to in an effort to justify why they don't wear one. When is the last time the NHTSA issued a recall on vehicles because seatbelt use was causing injuries or deaths? I think we all know the answer to that. Seatbelts save lives. Wear 'em.

I am so sorry for the family's loss I wish people would wear seat belts my bro in law was ejected he was never the same please wear those seat belts they do help despite peoples excuses Yes I know there are thoses once in awhile times there is the exception but most of the time chances are it does and will save your life please buckle up dont leave your family behind espically during the holiday seasons
