Christmas tree prices trimmed to fit family budgetsby Ed Ernstes (ernstes@wsbt.com)
Some area Christmas tree sellers are keeping last year's prices in order to help family budgets. (WSBT photo) ELKHART — This time of year, people aren't just thinking about Christmas shopping, many are already decorating for the holidays. With tight budgets, some are finding that perfect Christmas tree may not be a priority. Local tree farms are also working to keep sales up. Crowds were pretty steady at Wilfong's Christmas Tree Haven Friday morning. The family-run business is hoping for brisk sales this season. But the state of the economy could have an impact on that. “They may be buying a smaller tree or less expensive tree than what they have in years past. But I think most people will get some kind of tree of some sort," said Kim Wilfong of Wilfong’s Tree Haven. Wilfong says they've seen an increase in their overhead to grow trees as a result of the economy. Their resolve is to keep prices this year the same as last year to help with family budgets. Paige Keim and her family were out looking for a tree at Wilfong’s. She says keeping the same prices made it easy on the budget. But to get a good tree, they made some adjustments. Keim explained, “Well we just decided we'd spend a little bit less on gifts. The boys only get about three gifts, one from Santa, and we just scaled down a little bit. The tree is important. That's the things they'll remember.” In Goshen tree sales were also underway at the Chief Ice Cream Shop. They're also keeping prices the same as last year, but they've ordered fewer trees to sell than normal. "You know with the economy the way it is — trailer factories, a lot of people laid off — we didn't know whether people would get a tree," said Randy Steffen of The Chief Tree Sales. “After this weekend we'll probably know, [it'll] give us an idea of what it's going to be like really, as far as the sales,” added Steffen. If Christmas tree sales are higher than expected, everyone WSBT News spoke with said they will still have enough trees for the season. Do you believe that if we were unable to afford christmas trees that our souls would be in peril? Would we anger the Lord Jesus by not providing him with the annual sacrifice of an evergreen tree?
