Family and neighbors speak out about boy’s electrocution death

A 5-year-old boy is dead after investigators say he was playing with an electrical box at a Mishawaka apartment complex.

By WSBT News1

MISHAWAKA — Family and neighbors spent Friday paying tribute to a life taken far too soon.

Five-year-old Izaya Baiz-Hickey died Thursday night after being electrocuted inside a utility box at a Mishawaka apartment complex.

His family says Izaya was full of life and loved to explore.

Family, friends, and neighbors dropped off flowers and stuffed animals at a makeshift memorial Friday.

Izaya's family says he went outside to play with his friend after eating Thanksgiving dinner. About 15 minutes later they heard a loud noise. Izaya's friend rushed over to his home to let his family know.

His grandmother, Melodie Hale, says it's a tragedy that never should have happened.

"I was angry it happened on Thanksgiving,” said Hale, “but I think it's appropriate, because I am so thankful for the five years we had with him."

The family says Izaya and his friend threw a toy inside the electrical box. They think he went inside to get it.

As the family deals with their grief, neighbors and investigators are still trying to figure out how the little boy got access to the utility box and electricity.

Many people have a lot of questions, but very few answers.

"I was wondering how was that possible that it wasn't protected enough, you know, secured enough for no one to get in the box," said neighbor Kristina Garcia.

The biggest question: Was the box locked? When WSBT checked it Friday, the door was secured with a padlock. However, it was shiny and appeared to be new.

We talked to a neighbor who regularly walks past the box.

"It seemed to me it was unlocked a few times,” said Eric Watts.

When asked if the door was locked, Mishawaka Assistant Police Chief Mike Samp would not comment.

Eric Uitdenhowen is in charge of Mishawaka Utilities Electrical Division. He told us that he does not know if the door was locked.

But as the investigation continues, neighbors are left imagining the grief this family is experiencing.

"The mother and the grandmother and the father were very upset,” said neighbor Christina Rice. “The father went after the transformer to get his son out, and the cops had to restrain and put him to the ground. It was his only child."

“Every Thanksgiving they're going to have to remember that their kid died on Thanksgiving,” said Watts. “It's going to mark every one of their Thanksgivings. It's horrible.”

People who live in the apartment complex say they've heard the utility boxes have been vandalized before. However, police would not confirm those reports.

Really? You know for a fact that the lock was removed by a vandal? I think you should contact the police about this since you appear to have intimate knowledge. And Granger, what does your comment have to do with the actual story. No one cares that you were inconvienced by having to actually interact with a person when a little boy has died.

Mishawaka Utilities doesn't have the option to pay your bill online. I guess you have to go down there, enter through a wooden door that has a little bell on it and see the balding, middle aged clerk behind the counter who is wearing an apron and uses a cash register from the old west.

My husband works for Mishawaka Utilities and I know firsthand that those men put their lives on the line everyday, so that you can have your internet and TV. Vandalism is rampant and people should know better than to mess with one of those boxes. I cherish EVERY day that I have with my husband because accidents do happen and someone took the lock off that box. My heart goes out to the family.

To all of you blaming the parents, do some research. I used to have a job in which I handled toxic chemicals. We had strict rules for use, storage, and disposal to prevent anyone from being injured. I talked to an electrician friend of mine. He confirmed that there are procedures for transformer boxes as well. One of thoe procedures is that it is to be locked except when being worked on by a qualified person. Someone did not do his job and a little boy died. This should never have happened.

Confusious are you low on your meds? Check with your doctor.. I think you are taking the wrong ones. You sound so mad at people who are so heartbroken for what it happen to this family. Slow down, take your iv and then go take some rest. You are confused with names, spellings and peoples feelings. Instead of blaming the parents, go on your knees and start asking Jesus for forginess and healing. If my people who are called by my name should pray and call on me, God says.. so do this and all be OK

There are many examples of theft and indiscriminant vandalism here in our complex, and most is committed by kids old enough to know better. That goes for personal property as well as community property. I absolutely agree with this reader's comment: 8:48 AM Anonymous wrote ... Somewhere out there is the kid who vandalized that box.

The poor Izaya didn't even have to cross the street to get in trouble, it happened front of his apartment, how can you blame the family??? Of course, all the transformer boxes should remain opened BUT we all should be with our kids 24/7 in case they have that idea to enter in that box. You guys have an idiot thinking. God bless the family, no words can express how i feel about this story. All my heart is with the family and the baby. Be strong and don't take into account the stupid comments

T all those who are blaming the parents and making those stupid comments: what i understand from your lovely words is that we should lock our kids at home because maybe some transformer box is opened outside??? You serously have no idea of what you're saying. And even if both parents were playing with him, he couls have run and entered in the box in less than 2seconds and that would have happened. Stop writing useless words and think before writting anything.

Ok..you need to prove that the lock was not cut off before you blame anybody. There are hundreds of these boxes in town. They cannot keep watch over them 24/7 to make sure locks are not stolen. The locks are brass..worth money sadly. I heard a few people say the box was unlocked a few times..but none of them ever bothered to report it to the utility. How are they not responsible? It was an accident. Lets leave it at that.

Since when are live utility boxes left unlocked? SInce when can a child not go out and play without massive supervision. I don't go outside every time my kids go out to play. You anticipate that something this dangerous is going to be secure. The utility company and apartment complex need to investigate this and determine who is at fault. I know it doesn't ease the parents grief, but someone needs to pay for this. This is a major lawsuit!! May Izaya rest in peace.

For those of you who have comments about how this could have been prevented, those aren't helpful. When your child dies you examine every way you might have prevented it YOURSELF. You don't need people to point it out to you. No matter how closely we watch our children, God is in control and allows or disallows things to happen. Don't add hurt to agonizing grief with your insensitive comments. We had to bury a child too, it was a birth defect. We asked WHY. Just pray for them.
