MISHAWAKA -- Five-year-old Izaya Baiz-Hickey was electrocuted Thursday after he crawled inside a utility box at a Mishawaka apartment complex.

People have been mourning his loss at a makeshift memorial site, all in memory of a life that came to a tragic end.

"We knew the way that he was pounding on the door it was Izaya. And he said, 'Your son just blew up,'" said Izaya's grandmother Melodie Hale.

And just like that, Melodie Hale lost her 5-year-old grandson. Now she stands at this makeshift memorial mourning his death.

"It should have never happened," said Hale.

Hale says Izaya went outside to play with his friend after eating Thanksgiving dinner. Fifteen minutes later she heard a loud boom. Izaya died after he was electrocuted inside a utility box.

"I was angry it happened on Thanksgiving, but I think it's appropriate because I am so thankful for the five years we had with him," said Hale.

Izaya loved animals, school, and playing outside with his friends.

"He was like my little brother that I didn't really have. I loved him," said Izaya's friend Haley Nemeth.

But most of all, he loved life. And he lived every minute of it like it was his last.

"He was so full of life and energy and curiosity. And I know when he went in there that he had no idea that was going to hurt them," said Hale.

It's a tragedy that has changed this family forever. But they hope it serves as a lesson to all parents about the dangers of utility boxes.

"And let your kids know how dangerous these things can be. And maybe it wouldn't hurt to come out and check and make sure there's locks on these things. He definitely was a gift from God and I take consolence in that he is with God now," said Hale.

The family says Izaya and his friend threw a toy inside the utility box. They think he went inside to get it because it was the right thing to do.

Don't forget His father Wesley. He loved his son like there was no tomorrow. And Izaya's other Grandparents Brenda and Mike Hckey. They loved him very much also. Noboy ever mentioned this side of Izaya's family at all.

I am praying for this family, and their loss. The irresponsibility of people these days is overwhelming. Life is so special, as a gift from God, and no one has the right to take it away out of carelessness.

Nikki and her Mother Melodie are wonderful parents. Melodie babysat my children for many years and they still go over to their homes to spend the night. I never questioned my children's safety in their care. These ladies are gentle and beautiful people and deserve our love and comforting at this time. There should have been a lock on the door. There are 4 doors on that box and 1 door didn't have a lock till it was too late.

How can you blame the parents? Because they didn't walk past that box every day to make sure it was locked? Maybe they had something better to do. Is it going to come to that? Checking every little thing before we let our kids out to play? Leave the parents alone and place blame where it belongs - on the utility company. It SHOULD have been locked and maybe now they might put a fence around it? Make sure that's locked too please. My prayers are with the family.

Todd, it doesnt matter if the lock was stolen or cut or vandelized, its ultimately still the responsibility of the owner to assure it was secure.

How can you even be so bold in this time of tragedy to ask who was watching this child? How many times have we all let our kids outside to play with other children in our backyards or nearby. It was a beautiful holiday and as I drove through town I saw many children enjoying the weather. As a people, now is the time to not point fingers at the family. I am keeping the family in my prayers and that God has swiftly brough this angel to his loving arms. There but for the Grace of God go all of us

It is a very sad situation and I pray for the family. But everyone keeps saying that the boxes are supposed to be locked, yes they are. so are the cable boxes on the sides of the buildings, but kids get into things. I lived over there for a few years, I don't even remeber how many kids I have told to stay off those things. The responses that came out of the mouths was surprising. But hopefully this will rove to be a lesson for otehr children.

Saturday, Nov 29 at 9:50 PM Chris wrote ...

To "a mother", no one knows yet who is to blame for this tragic accident. This piece of equipment is most likely owned by Mishawaka Utilities, NOT the apartment complex. Stop jumping to conclusions. I know one thing, I sure wouldn't want a lot of people on here shooting their mouths off sitting on a jury judging my guilt or innocence at a trial. Scary.

The owner of this box is Mishawaka Utilities. The family would have to prove the lock was not stolen / cut off by somebody else. You as power consumers would be paying for the lawsuit with higher rates.

I am so sorry for their loss, I am a mother of 3 one of which is a 3 year old boy. I am also the mother of a 13 year old whose father was killed in a car accident on her 8th birthday. You sometimes wonder how she gets through the day, but she does. And they will to every Thanksgiving. Just remember it's a celebration of the life you shared with him. And what a blessing he was and how many people are touched by this story.
