MISHAWAKA — Two young boys escaped an explosion and house fire that ended up destroying the entire home. The fire broke out in the 56000 block of Andrea Court in Mishawaka Saturday morning.

"The floor from the fireplace through the kitchen is completely gone," said homeowner Melissa Chalman.

For Melissa, looking at the place she's called home for 10 years feels surreal.

"I guess just waves of shock," she said.

Saturday was set to be a special day. Melissa's youngest son turned 9.

While he and his older brother stayed at home playing a video game, she went to an appointment. Minutes later, Melissa received a frantic phone call.

"I picked up the phone and it was my son saying he was at the neighbors, the house was on fire. And then my neighbor picked up the phone because I couldn't believe it," said Melissa.

Melissa and her husband Erik are thankful their 11-year-old son acted quickly after hearing a series of noises.

"A fire alarm was going off, and a pop, and a bang. So he kind of checked downstairs, saw smoke and grabbed his younger brother, called 911," said Melissa.

"I came out and all you could see was smoke billowing out the roof and the back of the house and out the front of the house," said neighbor Carol Mellen.

The Chalmans may have lost their home, but they say they'll never forget the memories they shared.

“It's just being in the backyard playing with the boys a lot of the times," said Erik.

And if there's anything they've learned, they say you can always count on your neighbors.

"You never know really how nice people are until something bad happens. And you know the people down there that we don't even know, I was down there looking for our cats and apparently all the neighbors down there are looking for our cats, which is nice," said Melissa.

Six fire departments helped contain the fire. They initially tried fighting it on the inside, but the flames moved too quickly, so they moved outside. Shortly after that, the first floor caved in.

Someone missed the point. Charitable accounts are usually not setup by the family. Insurance coverage varies from policy to policy. The point is to help your neighbor.

There may not be a charitable account set up if these parents were as responsible with their finances as they are with their child-rearing. If they had homeowner's insurance then all their stuff AND their home will be replaced. People say they can't afford insurance, but can you afford to NOT have it if the unthinkable happens?

So at just what age CAN you leave your kids home alone? I have an 11 yr. old and I've left him with his 8 yr. old sister for short periods of time. I think it's up to the parents as if they think their kid(s) are mature enough to know what to do in a situation like this. (I know some ADULTS that should not be left home alone). I give this 11 yr. old a lot of credit as I'm sure his parents do too. He did what he was taught which was to get out and THEN call 9-1-1. I think he's a hero.

you peaple that think it was wrong to leave those two boys alone was wrong it sounds to me like the oldest did a very good job of handling the situation and should be told so

C'mon anon at 5:32, don't even start with that crap. our kids were allowed to be at home for short periods of time when my oldest was 11 and youngest was 6. we could go shopping or run errands and for two hours, they were fine. Get off it already and quit looking to blame someone, especially the parents. obviously the boys were responsible enough to be left, as they escaped safely and called 911. i hope that the community will continue to be there for this family as they rebuild.

The children didn't start the fire. There would have been a fire if every adult in the family was there.

I'm sorry for your loss, but why were to young boys left alone without an adult?

Its too bad to see this nice house have gone into flames. Now this couple are despondent and dont what to do. I am sure they lost a lot of items in their home. Specially the sentimental items that we love so much like pictures of long dead relatives or wedding dress that we were keeping for memorabilia in the closet. The mementos of babies and children at play. My cousing lost most of his collection of wooden ducks that was keeping in the attick. He did that for his kids so they will see animals
