MISHAWAKA — Blowing snow created hazardous driving conditions on area roads Monday morning.

Indiana State Police reported several slide-offs and accidents on the Toll Road from Illinois all the way to Mishawaka. In a press release issued around noon, troopers urged drivers to slow down and pay attention.

According to that press release, troopers in the Lowell District were extremely busy and investigated numerous slide-offs, 40 property damage crashes and 4 personal injury crashes in Lake, Newton and Jasper counties.

In St. Joseph County, State Road 2 was shut down after a semi jackknifed on the road around 8:30 Monday morning. Other than that police were responding to mostly minor accidents.

At least one commuter said conditions on side streets were not much fun Monday.

"Oh it's been rough, very slick," said Nate Niespodziany. "You just gotta be careful and watch people around you."

Snow was expected to taper off mid-afternoon with more expected later in the week.

Dear Plows, Please stay parked. It amazes me that people are not aware that simple plowing of light snow can make roads WORSE. By taking a small build up off the road when temps are at or near freezing, especially on windy days, only allows ice to form. I am 49 and have never unintensionally spun my car before but I have already done it twice this year, only because roads are a "clear" sheet of ice. Leave some light snow, 2" or less. That way there is something to get traction from...

Paul, I can understand your love of snow. I too love snow, just on Christmas Eva and Christmas Day, LOL!! Personally I do love snow, just hate to drive in it. and people need to realize they need to slow down for the conditions, and even though you have 4 wheel drive, it doesn't always cover your butt! Everyone needs to be smart!!

Here down under we would like to have snow too. All aussies are waiting for snow to come and enjoy the white holidays. But it seems that it wont happen so we are content to have the heat wave that is punching us like a beast of bees that punch us in the mouth. You all should have a good day when enjoying the nice ice cream on the road to nothingness. This are the times to enjoy a wonderful Christmas along with the buddies from over yonder who come to visit us. North Pole thats it..

When I took off from work because of a head ache I realized that the roads are gona be a piece of cake. But reality shook me off my feet. This blowing snow that cant hardly see anything. NO wonder lots of people complain about the roads being without salt or at least being swept over. Thre are lots of slide offs and hit people every where. You have to be very careful and try to stay on your line because the frozen bridges can accomplish dangerous driving for you. Be extra careful please..

What is going to take to get the plows out and clean the roadways, you don't need salt to plow with just clean the slush off the road ways.
